Western North Region, July 15, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has labeled the escalating issue of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, a national emergency, promising intensified government action to curb the crisis. Speaking at a durbar during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Western North Region, Mahama highlighted the severe environmental damage caused by galamsey in areas such as Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi Anhwiaso.

“We are alarmed by the environmental destruction reported across Awaso, Dadieso, and Sefwi-Anhwiaso, primarily due to illegal mining,” Mahama stated. “This is a national emergency. The national taskforce will continue its efforts to halt illegal mining in our forest reserves and on our water bodies.”

The President also addressed concerns about rogue anti-galamsey task forces allegedly extorting money from legitimate small-scale mining operators. “I have noticed the activities of illegal anti-galamsey taskforces that go around extorting money from licensed small-scale mining companies,” he said. “I have requested the authorities to arrest and prosecute any individuals involved in this illegal activity.”

Mahama’s remarks underscore the government’s renewed commitment to tackling the galamsey menace, which has long plagued Ghana’s environment, polluting water bodies and destroying forest reserves. The administration’s focus on both illegal mining and fraudulent task forces signals a broader effort to restore order and protect the country’s natural resources.
