Samuel Awuku, MP for Akuapim North, has criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to eliminate fuel allowances and halt fuel allocations for political appointees, labeling it a superficial move for public relations. The directive is part of the government’s Reset Agenda to cut costs and redirect funds to priority sectors.
Awuku argued that the policy lacks substance and urged the government to demonstrate commitment by closing fuel depots at Jubilee House and Osu Castle, where appointees access fuel. “If they’re serious about cutting fuel allowances, shut down the depots at Osu and Jubilee House. Don’t play with our minds,” he said.
He also demanded transparency, calling for the government to disclose annual fuel allowance expenditures to verify savings. “Let’s know how much was spent, so we can measure real savings. Without that, it’s just games,” Awuku added.
In contrast, Samuel Atta-Mills, MP for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem, praised the directive, stating it promotes prudent public spending and serves the state’s best interests.
